Alpo Canine Frisbee Philadelphia Eastern Regionals - 6/13/98

Plf1 This was some competition! There were thirty-five competitors at this event which covered the North Eastern U.S. (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Washington DC and Virginia (I think that's right).

There were two divisions; Division I - Expert, and Division II- Novice.   This was my first regional event, and would you believe it I had to go first (Novice class of course)!   I'm O.K. at catching a frisbee and mini distance competitions.  This event however started with a freestyle competition.   Freestyle is a choreographed routine where you're graded by judges in a manner similar to figure skating, diving or gymnastics.   You have between a minute (Div II) and a minute and a half (Div I) to show your tricks choreographed to music.   Well it's a good thing I went first because I would have been extremely nervous after watching some of the other dogs.   If you've never seen one of these events, do yourself a favor and go to a regional competition sometime.

Only the top eight dogs in each division made it to the second round which was mini distance.   Unfortunately I was not one of them.   When the dust cleared, the winners in Division I and II were both friends I had met at the Saugerties, NY event a few weeks earlier. They were:

Division I winner : Johnny McGuire & Spirit

Division II winner: Eric Miller and Nitro Ned

Congratulations to all.

A happy Rudy
